Whether you're paddling in the race or cheering from the shore, this event promises fun, excitement, and an opportunity to make a real difference.
A History of Speed and Teamwork
Dragon boat racing is an ancient sport with roots stretching back over 2,000 years to the southern provinces of China. Today, it's a global phenomenon known for its colorful boats and fiercely competitive races. At the KARM Dragon Boat Festival, teams of 20 paddlers, one drummer, and one steersperson race in 41-foot canoes adorned with dragon heads and tails, creating a spectacular sight.
Support KARM's Mission
The festival is more than just an exciting day on the water; it’s a vital fundraiser for the Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries. KARM provides rescue services for those in need throughout the Knoxville area, offering meals, emergency shelter, and recovery programs. By participating in the Dragon Boat Festival, racers, donors and spectators support KARM's mission to provide rescue, recovery, and reentry services, transforming lives in the community.
Experience the Cove at Concord Park
This fun event is located along the banks of Fort Loudoun Lake, the Cove at Concord Park, an ideal setting for dragon boat racing. The park offers ample space for spectators to watch the races, enjoy the food and activities, and soak in the beautiful lake views. With playgrounds, hiking trails, and sandy beach areas, it's a fantastic venue for families to enjoy a day full of fun and excitement.
What to Expect at the Festival
Racers can look forward to adrenaline-pumping competition, with teams striving to sync their strokes and speed across the water to victory. Each team will compete in at least 4 100-meter straight-course races that last about one minute each to complete. (Training sessions are available before each annual event, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Registration for this year’s races is already closed, but there is plenty of time to start planning your team for next year.)
Observers will enjoy a festive atmosphere with plenty of entertainment off the water, including music, food vendors, and interactive games and activities for all ages. It’s a day full of fun, where the excitement of the races is matched only by the spirit of community. Click this link for more event details.
