SOUTH KNOXVILLE

A larger proportion of mid-century and modern construction homes.

Welcome to South Knoxville

|n getting to know Knoxville one route is to explore the city in broad segments divided into North, East, South, West, and Downtown. Knoxville is historically a diverse city with many different communities, interesting architecture, food, and shopping. I think you will find each of these areas has something unique to offer!

South Knoxville is rich with history including multiple forts from the Civil War era, marble quarries, and nature parks such as IJAMS. Technically speaking, South Knoxville lies south of Knoxville’s downtown area and abuts several other cities. Spanning from one of Knoxville’s main highways, Chapman Highway (US-441) which runs North and South, South Knoxville also includes several major thoroughfares such as Alcoa Highway (US-129), Maryville Pike (TN-33), and Sevierville Pike and connects to downtown Knoxville via several key bridges. Currently, the city is working on a waterfront plan that would develop the real estate and areas along the river on either side of Downtown Knoxville.

There are many historic homes in South Knoxville but the nabes in this section of town have a larger proportion of mid-century and modern construction homes than you will find in North and East Knoxville. The south area includes the nabes of Lindbergh Forest, Island Home Park, Old Sevier, Vestal, Lake Forest, and Colonial Village. Originally South Knoxville was separated from downtown Knoxville due to a lack of bridges. With the addition of the Gay Street and Henley Street bridges south Knoxville began to grow at the turn of the century. Since that time with the development of Chapman Highway into Sevierville and the Smokey Mountain National Forest, the area has developed immensely. Other major roads also connect South Knoxville to the city of Seymour and Maryville which has brought more people to this part of Knoxville in recent years and increased the number of large employers in the area.

Although South Knoxville is separated from the rest of the city because of the river, there are plenty of events and sites to enjoy. Some of the local events that occur annually in South Knoxville are the Vestival at Candoro Marble and children's day camps, plant sales, and classes at IJAMS nature park. Whether you are just on your way to the mountains or you live in this area don’t miss the eateries of King Tuts, Ye Olde Steak House, and SoKno Taco they are simply delicious!
